The feminine sexual organ is called vulva. It consists of the pubic bone, labia majora, labia minora (the vaginal lips, both inner and outer), the vagina (the tube allowing the access to the uterus), the clitoris, the urethral orifice, and the associated glands.

This area together with the anus is protected by a “sheet” of muscular fibers. Known as the pelvic floor, or the perineum, this area is made of both voluntary and involuntary muscles, interconnected.

Each opening of this area (the urethra, the vagina and the anus) has a sphincter of its own, which keeps all the orifices closed.

For the overall health, the most important muscular group is Levator Ani, because it practically sustains the various organs (the bladder, the vagina, the intestines, the uterus).

The median part of this muscle is also known as the PC muscle. This muscle keeps everything in its place. They “fight” the gravity when we walk.

THE MUSCLES OF THE PELVIC FLOOR

THE URETHRAL SPHINCTER – Muscles that hold the urinary orifice
ISCHIOCAVERNOSUS – On the sides of the clitoris, they connect the erectile tissue of the clitoris
BULBOCAVERNOSUS – On the sides of the clitoris, they connect the erectile tissue of the clitoris
TRANSVERSE PERINEUS – Connects the vaginal and the anal sphincters
ERECTOR CLITORIDUS – Holds the clitoris in erection
SPHINCTER VAGINAE – Tightens the vaginal orifice and contributes to the erection of the clitoris
LEVATOR ANI – The PC muscle surrounds the vagina as a veritable sphincter and sustains it
SPHINCTER ANI – It is usually relaxing during the excretion, in the rest of the time, the anal orifice is closed by this muscle

 

The table from above describes most of the voluntary perineal muscles from the perineum, referring to the muscles that can be actively trained.

The great majority of the voluntary muscles are found in the pelvic floor, which is the most active area during lovemaking.

During the orgasm with discharge of the energy, an involuntary contraction of the whole pelvic floor occurs, along with a contraction of the exterior third of the vagina, the rectum and the inferior part of the abdomen.

However, the muscles that react with utmost intensity are the transverse perineal muscle, the PC muscle the anal sphincter and the inferior part of the rectum.

All these muscles are interconnected. If you train one, you will train all of them. Once you will attain a certain degree of muscular control over them, you will be able to isolate them and to work them individually.

Keeping your sexual muscles at a high level of fitness will improve their contractibility and effectiveness.

HOW DO THESE MUSCLES BECOME WEAKENED?
Starting with the age of 25, these muscles may begin to lose their muscular mass. This is not an isolated phenomenon, as it occurs with virtually any muscle in the body.

There is also a reduction in the speed of reaction, as well as in the muscular power and the duration of the contraction. The lubrication is also diminished especially after menopause.

If you notice that your lubrication is faulty, the friction during the lovemaking can predispose you to irritations or even to infections.

Among the symptoms that indicate a weakening of this area we can enumerate an overall pelvic fatigue, and the sensation of heaviness in the pelvis.

Some women manifest a complete lack of sensations and numbness in the pelvic area, and this may cause some drops of urine to be lost when coughing, laughing, sneezing or because any other reason.

One may think that if one practices regularly the jogging or any other sport, your body is strong and consequently the pelvic floor muscles are strengthened. This is not necessarily so, because the exercises are especially designed for these muscles.

A marathon runner may have well-developed muscles of the legs, but a not so developed torso. In the same way, you can do fitness or any other sport, but these exercises will not have the same effect on the pelvic floor as the Kegel exercises.

A recent study indicates that 48% of a group of women subject to tests regularly have small discharges of urine while laughing, coughing, or sneezing.

The urinary incontinence is generally associated to weak pelvic muscles. The muscles are weakened because they are not used and solicited anymore.

Regardless of how active your lifestyle might be, these muscles are not used enough.

Training your muscles before the appearance of any weakness or even before pregnancy can bring about many benefits. Many women who want to practice their muscles have troubles in locating them.

Consequently, if you decide to postpone and wait to begin this practice until a problem appears, when it actually does, you will have to deal with a double challenge.

Learning and practicing before time means that you will be able to use the pelvic muscles all your life, creating an acceptable level of force in them and reducing the possibility of problems in the future. Not to mention a much more intense sexual life.

LOSING MUSCULAR CONTROL
The urinary incontinence is the involuntary leak of urine when contracting the abdominal muscles.

The discovery of a gynecologist according to which the Asian women have this symptom in fewer cases than the western women is not at all surprising, considering what we mentioned so far.

The studies have indicated that in the west up to half of the young women have had this unpleasant experience at least once in their life, and other 16% have this symptom daily.

It can happen while you laugh, cough, sneeze, lift something heavy, or even during an intense exercise, such as running or aerobics.

For some women, the incontinence can lead to certain discharges during lovemaking, or even to the total loss of sensations.

If the muscles are not strengthened, the discharges will continue, and even increase, because the unused muscles will become weakened more and more.

There were cases of such women who tried to fix this problem surgically and failed, but they succeeded with the Kegel exercises.

You can even insert small weights in the vagina, which will add supplementary work to the muscles. Often the lack of sensations and control on the muscles will make the practice even more difficult.

The physical stimulation with the weights helps the women to focus on the contracted muscles which will increase the effectiveness of the practice.
