Although very different in its goals, these two sciences, one empirical and the other spiritual, often join together in a surprising way due to their discoveries and approaches. Sexology is a medical science of sexuality it is a mechanical, horizontal work it does not approach the spiritual, vertical, and magical aspects which TANTRA does.

On the contrary, according to the Tantric outlook sexuality is the furnace of the alchemic transformations of energy and consciousness, of their expansion which starts from the body and continues beyond the body. Actually, TANTRA starts where sexology stops; yet, this latter one often confronts us with facts or orgasmic experiences which are strangely analogous with some of the statements from TANTRA YOGA. Therefore, it has been deemed useful to begin this exposition of facts within our course in a similar manner as in sexology, in this way it will be easier for the Western mind to understand and will not take us away from the truth as exposed in the Tantric texts.

Sexologists define the orgasm in a non-poetic way, as a “trance, with loss of reality”; TANTRA says it is a blissful state of expansion of consciousness in which the usual limitations of the selfish ego are suddenly cancelled, the tyranny of the mind is adjourned and subject falls into the vertigo of the void. For a short amazing moment one discovers abandonment, death of the ego, canceling of time into a flood of Unity, which all make this condition identical with a metaphysical experience; therefore, in terms of TANTRA, Enlightenment is often called “the cosmic orgasm”.

The orgasm process of an average sexual experience may be drawn as a curve that presents four phases:

Phase 1: Excitation

In the first stage, the preliminary sensuous game arouses desire, and generates excitement. This is materialized through the man’s erection, and the woman’s vaginal lubrication.

Phase 2: Charging

The amount of sexual tension determines a relative increase of the breathing-rhythm, pulse and blood-pressure. These reactions generate a general feeling of tension.

Phase 3: Orgasm

The orgasm phase is characterized by loss of the ego. Excitation which was previously focused mainly in the genital area now begins to spread throughout the entire body and rises towards the head. If a loss of conscious control occurs- as happens in the common case in this moment, which is called “the point of no-return” there occurs a series of reflex contractions of all the muscles that surround the genital organs, and the anus (pelvic muscles, muscles of the perineum, anal sphincters, the pubeo-coccygeal muscle (PC -muscle), prostate for men, vaginal and uterine muscles for women, anus-lifting muscles, and so on). These contractions bring about an ejaculation for men and explosive loss of vaginal secretions for women which may be deemed as a form of ejaculation.

Phase 4: Resolution

In the last phase, the body calms down while the mental consciousness rises again. Sensations from the orgasmic stage may still persist for a time, as slight waves, or vibrations. Because of the huge loss of energy that occurs from the ejaculation, any stimulation during this period of a new orgasm is impossible; this “refractory” period is longer in the case of men (5 minutes or more) than in women (from a few seconds to one hour). Actually, there are many women who – because of their great telluric potential – can have several repeated orgasms, if their partner doesn’t wait for the complete resolution of this period for resuming the sexual play.

There are certain emphasized differences of rhythm between men and women which make that the feminine orgasm has a more implosive nature, while the masculine orgasm has an explosive one. Because of the differences in time-factor (namely that men reach orgasm in shorter time than women do) it appears obvious that it is necessary for men to become able to control at will, delay, and eventually cancel their ejaculation. Actually it is precisely the ejaculation which makes the essential difference: men, because of the explosive loss of substantial component parts, a genuine “electric black out” is generated, a kind of loss of connection with the energy-source that is followed by a false relaxation, which is actually merely a product of exhaustion. Women, by their nature, are much closer to having a Tantric orgasm, a kind of ‘orgasm without ejaculation’, which may be prolonged for almost indefinite periods of time, and which does not manifest only in the genital area, but has vibratory waves in the entire being. It is interesting to note here that macho-type men are those who want to ejaculate at all costs and are the most difficult to convince to control their sexual energy, while more feminine men (which does not mean those with aberrant, or pathological inversions) often prefer not to ejaculate, but to extend their orgasms.
